I also installed vmware 16 and then upgraded the kernel and reboot. Then i run vmware and i had to click install to a window appeared to build the kernel modules and everything went fine.
This window appeared in all previous versions except version 15.5.6 were modules build in the background.

Same for me. The screenshot I post was taken after clicking on install.
